53.7% of AI Search Categories Have No Clear Brand Owner — and That's Your Window
August 2026 · Semrush
Semrush tracked 50,000 brands across 1,094 topic categories in ChatGPT from January to June 2026. The headline finding: only 15.2% of categories have a clear brand owner — defined as a brand leading in at least 4 of 5 prompts for that topic and staying at least 5 percentage points ahead of the nearest competitor. Another 31.2% have an emerging leader. The remaining 53.7% are open field — no dominant player, multiple contenders with roughly equal citation share.
Two findings make the category ownership data more actionable than it first appears. First, larger topic categories are less likely to have an owner: only 11.3% of high-volume topics have a clear leader, versus 19% of niche topics. The biggest AI search real estate is still up for grabs. Second, retention is sticky: once a brand establishes category ownership, it holds the top position in 90.4% of month-over-month comparisons. The compounding effect is real — get there first, and you stay there. The window to claim unclaimed categories will narrow as more brands wake up to this data.

B2B Strategy · 2026 · Corporate Ink
88% of CMOs Are Now Being Asked About AI Visibility by Their Board
Corporate Ink's GEO 2026 report finds that board-level urgency around AI visibility has now reached 88% of CMOs and VP-level marketers — but only 34% have a defined strategy for it, and only 26% know which media outlets AI engines actually crawl in their category. Meanwhile, 74% of B2B tech marketers say AI systems misrepresent their brand in generated answers. The gap between executive awareness and execution readiness is at its widest.

Google AI Mode · 2026 · ALM Corp / Profound
Google's Self-Citation in AI Mode Jumped 8.4x — Business Profiles and Product Panels Drive It
Research from Profound tracking AI Mode citation share found google.com's share surged 8.4x between April and June 2026, driven almost entirely by two Google surfaces: Business Profile cards for local queries and Product Knowledge Panels for product comparisons. The five most affected sectors are hospitality, home services, restaurants, real estate, and healthcare — all categories where Google now routes user intent into its own properties rather than to external sites.

New Tool · August 13, 2026 · Mod Op
One-Third of AI Citations Come From Sites With Domain Authority Below 40
Mod Op launched a free AI search visibility audit (geo.modop.ai) alongside The GEO 50 — a ranking of the 50 brands with the highest AI answer visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. The underlying citation data surfaced a finding that cuts against conventional media targeting: more than one-third of 22,881 analyzed AI citations came from sites with a Domain Authority below 40. The publications shaping AI answers in most categories are not the flagship media brands that appear on traditional PR lists.

Navarro's Take
"The 53.7% open-field number from the Semrush study is the most important data point in GEO right now. More than half of all topic categories in ChatGPT have no clear winner — and because retention is sticky at 90.4%, whoever claims ownership first compounds that advantage every month. Brands waiting for the AI search landscape to 'settle' before investing are making a mistake. The settling is happening now, quietly, and early movers are building leads that late movers will find very hard to close."
