Only 30% of Brands Maintain AI Visibility Between Consecutive Queries
August 2026 · AirOps
AirOps tracked AI search citation patterns across thousands of queries and found a striking instability problem: only 30% of brands maintain consistent visibility between two consecutive AI answers on the same topic. The other 70% appear in some responses and disappear in others — even when the query and platform don't change. The culprit is content staleness: brands lacking quarterly updates are 3x more likely to lose citation eligibility than brands with freshly updated pages.
The report also confirms the de-coupling of SEO and AI visibility: 60% of AI Overview citations come from URLs outside the organic top-20. Meanwhile, 85% of brand mentions that build AI model associations originate from third-party domains — not brand-owned pages. Structural content factors (sequential headings, direct answer formatting) correlate at 0.71 with citation rates; domain authority correlates at 0.18. The takeaway is direct: the variables that drive AI citation are different from the ones Google rewards, and they need to be maintained on a different cadence.
