ChatGPT AI Visitors Convert at 15.9% — vs. 1.76% for Organic Search
May 2026 · OmniBound
OmniBound's 60+ data point GEO benchmarks report surfaces the conversion gap that should be driving every marketing budget conversation: visitors arriving from ChatGPT convert at 15.9%, versus 1.76% for traditional organic search. That's a 9x delta on the same product — the difference isn't intent, it's qualification. Someone who found your brand recommended by an AI system has already passed through a trust filter that organic results don't provide.
The same report finds that adding statistics to content improves AI visibility by 41%, and that combined GEO techniques (structured data, entity signals, citation-optimized formats) boost it up to 40% overall. Despite this, only 40.6% of the 92% of marketers who plan GEO optimization are actually implementing it — leaving a wide execution gap that is still open for most niches.

46x Gap in Brand Citation Rates Between ChatGPT and Perplexity
Leapd.ai's platform breakdown finds that brand citation rates differ by 46x between engines: ChatGPT cites brands in just 0.59% of responses, while Perplexity does so in 13.05%. Only 11% of domains receive citations from both platforms — meaning each has its own source pool. Meanwhile, only 38% of AI Overview citations come from top-10 organic results (down from 76% in mid-2025), and AI-cited pages earn 35% more organic clicks than uncited competitors at the same rank.

AI Summaries Cut Click Rates to 8% — Authority Signals Are Now the Primary Currency
When AI summaries appear, users click traditional results only 8% of the time — vs. 15% when there's no AI summary (Pew Research, 2026). GlobalReach argues that authority signals — expert-reviewed content, original research, genuine customer reviews — are now the primary ranking currency across all surfaces. Rankings alone no longer predict discovery.

Navarro's Take
"The 15.9% conversion rate from ChatGPT vs. 1.76% from organic search is the number that should be in every GEO budget proposal. We spend enormous energy optimizing for a channel that converts at under 2%, and almost nothing on the channel that converts at 9x that rate. The 46x citation rate gap between ChatGPT and Perplexity makes this even sharper - you can't optimize for both with the same strategy. At this point, not knowing which AI engines are citing you, and which are ignoring you, is the same as running a paid campaign without conversion tracking. The data is there. Most brands are just not looking."
