69% of Buyers Changed Vendor Preferences After Consulting AI
August 2026 · Automation Alley
Automation Alley's August 2026 AI visibility report reframes AI search as a buying tool, not just a research tool. 94% of buyers now use AI to research vendors, with 51% starting their research in AI chat rather than a search engine. More consequentially: 69% changed their vendor preferences after an AI conversation — meaning AI answers are actively reshaping purchase shortlists before a brand's sales team knows a prospect exists.
The report also highlights significant platform variance in citation behavior: ChatGPT averaged 3.7 citations per answer while Gemini averaged 11, and only 30% of sources appeared consistently across multiple AI platforms. The citation landscape is fragmented by engine, reinforcing that single-platform optimization misses the majority of AI-driven buyer touchpoints.
