Google AI Overviews Now Appear on 48% of All Searches — Uncited Sites See 61% CTR Drop
August 2026 · MountWebTech
New tracking data confirms that Google AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all search queries — nearly half of every search session. For websites that are not cited in those AI-generated answers, the impact is immediate and severe: click-through rates drop by 61% compared to the same SERP without an AI Overview present. The compounding effect is what makes this number alarming: as AI Overview coverage expands from 48% toward a majority of searches, the CTR penalty for non-cited sites applies to an ever-larger share of queries.
The data reframes the GEO stakes entirely. Before AI Overviews reached scale, organic rankings still drove meaningful traffic even when an AI summary appeared. At 48% coverage and a 61% CTR penalty for the uncited, traditional top-10 rankings are delivering materially less traffic than they did 18 months ago — and that gap is structural, not temporary. Brands without a citation strategy are not "missing out on upside"; they are experiencing a compounding traffic loss that widens every quarter.
