YouTube Mentions Are Now the Strongest Predictor of AI Visibility — Stronger Than Backlinks, Domain Authority, or On-Page SEO
2026 · Ahrefs / SEO Francisco
An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands found that YouTube mentions correlate with AI brand visibility at 0.737 — higher than any other factor measured, including branded web mentions (0.664), branded anchor text (0.527), and backlinks (0.218). YouTube mentions are now 3.4x more predictive of AI visibility than the metric that has defined SEO for two decades.
The researchers were careful to note that correlation is not causation — brands with high AI visibility also tend to have strong cross-platform presence, and the underlying driver is composite brand authority, not video content specifically. But the directional signal is clear: Perplexity and Google AI Overviews cite YouTube heavily as a source, and brands appearing in relevant video content accumulate a corroboration signal that text-only brands don't. The study also found the top three factors are all off-site brand signals, none of which appear in a traditional SEO audit.
