The Two ChatGPTs, Brand Mentions vs. Backlinks, and the llms.txt Non-Event
|
This Week
● ChatGPT reasoning mode creates two separate citation pools — 75% of domains don't overlap
● Brand mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664 vs. 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 75K brands)
● 97% of llms.txt files received zero AI crawler requests in May 2026 — Ahrefs, 137K domains
● GEO platforms go mainstream — ChatGPT cites top-10 search results only 30% of the time

Lead Story
ChatGPT Has Two Citation Pools. Most Brands Only Know About One.
New Semrush research analyzed hundreds of prompts across ChatGPT's Instant and Thinking modes and found that only 25% of cited domains overlap between the two modes for the same prompts. That means 75% of sources ChatGPT cites in Thinking mode are entirely different from what it cites in Instant mode — for identical queries.
The behavioral difference is significant: Thinking mode performs 4.6x more web searches per query. It deprioritizes Reddit and user-generated content, and increases its reliance on official documentation, government sites, and academic sources (which grew from 12.4% to 17.5% of citations in reasoning mode).
The implication for brands: if you track ChatGPT as one channel, you are almost certainly overestimating visibility for casual browsers and missing the visibility gap with active buyers — who are far more likely to use Thinking mode for complex purchase decisions.

Research
Brand Mentions Predict AI Citations. Backlinks Don't.
A BrandMentions analysis of 410,000 public mentions across 240 brands found brand mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664 — versus just 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 75K brands). The three signals that matter most for AI citation are all off-site and unlinked.

Data
97% of llms.txt Files Get Zero AI Requests
Ahrefs analyzed 137,000 domains in May 2026. Of those with a valid llms.txt, 97% saw zero requests from AI crawlers. AI retrieval bots (GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot) accounted for just 1.1% of all llms.txt requests.

GEO Goes Mainstream — But Citation Gaps Widen
CiteLens data shows Google AI Mode and Perplexity pull ~90% of citations from Google's top-10. ChatGPT sources only 30% that way. GEO measurement tools are now a full product category — the AI answer layer is becoming as measurable as search.

Key Takeaway
The ChatGPT Reasoning Mode finding is the most important shift I've seen this year for GEO strategy.
If you're tracking ChatGPT as one channel, you're measuring two completely different audiences as one number. A brand that's visible in Instant mode but invisible in Thinking mode is winning the casual browse and losing the buying decision. Thinking mode correlates with deeper purchase intent — it runs 4.6x more searches, queries more authoritative sources, and discards UGC signals that Instant mode values. That's not a minor variation. That's a completely different ranking contest. The immediate action: pull a representative set of your target queries and run them in both modes. If your brand disappears in Thinking mode, you need primary sources, official documentation, and entity consistency — not more blog posts.
