Semrush AI Visibility Index 2026
Index Report
126 Million Prompts, 4 Platforms, 36 Brands: The Concentration of AI Citation Authority Is Extreme
Semrush's expanded AI Visibility Index analyzed 126 million U.S. AI search prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews from January through April 2026. The headline finding: only 36 brands managed to maintain top-100 citation visibility across all four platforms simultaneously. The platform-to-platform divergence is significant — ChatGPT averages 15 sources per response while Gemini averages just 3, meaning Gemini citation authority is far more concentrated and harder to break into. Industry concentration compounds the problem: in News/Media, the top three brands hold 82.9% of all citation visibility; in Finance, the top three hold 41.4%. The data also reveals a 2.25x performance gap between organizations that have integrated SEO and AI visibility strategies versus those still running them as separate silos — 81% of integrated programs reported increased traffic vs. 36% of siloed ones. And 45% of marketing leaders still cannot accurately measure their brand's visibility in AI answers.

Citation Study
47,097 Citations Analyzed: 75% of AI-Cited Pages Were Updated Within the Last Year — But "Fresh" Doesn't Mean "New"
Seer Interactive's recency study is the most granular freshness analysis published to date. Analyzing 47,097 citations across LLMs, 75% of cited pages were updated within the last year and 88% within two years. The engine-level split matters: Gemini most aggressively weights freshness (78% within last year), ChatGPT is at 73%, and Perplexity the most lenient at 65%. The finding that changes strategy: over 25% of "fresh" citations go to pages originally published two or more years ago but actively maintained through regular updates. Consistency of updates — not recency of creation — is what signals freshness to AI citation systems. Pages cited across all study months averaged just 6 months since their last update.

Navarro's Take
The 2.25x Gap Between Integrated and Siloed AI Strategies Is the Only Number That Matters Right Now
Semrush's finding that 81% of organizations with integrated SEO and AI visibility strategies saw increased traffic vs. 36% of those running them separately isn't a marginal difference — it's a 2.25x performance gap. The brands treating GEO as a separate experiment are getting half the results of brands that folded it into their existing content and search operations. What this actually means in practice: the same content team, the same publishing calendar, the same analytics infrastructure — just extended to cover AI citation signals alongside ranking signals. The overhead cost is low. The performance delta is not. If I had to pick one slide to put in front of a CMO in July 2026, this is it.
