New Academic Survey: 53% of AI-Cited Domains Don't Appear in Organic Top 10
GEO Research · arxiv.org · July 2026
A comprehensive academic survey published this month — "Optimizing Visibility in Generative Engines: A Critical Survey of Generative Engine Optimization (2023–2026)" — consolidates findings across 11,500+ queries and delivers the most rigorous cross-engine analysis of AI citation behavior to date. The headline number: 53% of domains cited by Google AI Overviews do not appear in the organic top 10, and 27% are absent from the top 100 entirely. Traditional SEO rank and AI citation are decoupled — not theoretically, but empirically, at scale.
The cross-platform findings are equally striking: only 26% domain overlap exists between Bing Chat and Perplexity citations across 672 responses — meaning a brand well-positioned on one AI engine is invisible on another roughly three-quarters of the time. The survey also quantifies retrieval instability: AI Overviews show just 18% page overlap month-to-month, compared to 45% for traditional Google search. Your citation position today is significantly less stable than your organic rank. The implication for brands: AI visibility requires engine-specific strategies, not a single unified approach.
