Google's Top-10 Rankings and AI Citations Have Decoupled. Here's the Metric That Replaces Rank.
July 2026 · Digital Applied
Digital Applied's AI Share of Voice framework report surfaces one of the most consequential structural shifts in search this year. The overlap between Google's top-10 pages and AI citations fell from approximately 76% in June 2025 to 38% by March 2026 — a 50% erosion in nine months. Today, only 44.3% of Google top-10 pages appear in any AI answer at all. For ChatGPT specifically, the overlap with Google's top-10 is just 2.1%. SEO rankings and AI visibility are no longer correlated metrics.
The report introduces AI Share of Voice (AI SoV) as the replacement metric: the percentage of AI-generated responses that mention, cite, or recommend a brand across a defined set of category prompts. The same brand can score 20% on a mention-based formula, 16.8% on a position-weighted formula, or 31.4% on a citation-based formula — identical underlying data, materially different readings. The report proposes standardizing on citation-based SoV for commercial strategy. One additional finding worth noting: up to 70.6% of AI-driven visits arrive without attribution data, meaning most brands are tracking less than a third of their actual AI referral traffic.

Research · 2026 · TheStacc
48% of All Google Searches Feature AI Overviews. B2B Tech: 82%. And Cited Brands Get 91% More Paid Clicks.
AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all Google searches (up 58% year-over-year), with B2B Technology queries triggering them 82% of the time. The CTR hit for non-cited brands is severe — 61% organic CTR decline when AIO appears. But brands cited inside AI Overviews see 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than uncited competitors on the same query.

Benchmark · 2026 · MaximusLabs
89% of B2B Companies Fail AI Citation Baseline. The 11% That Don't Share These 4 Traits.
Analyzing 200+ B2B SaaS companies across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, MaximusLabs found 89% fail baseline structural citation requirements. The visible 11% share four traits: platform-differentiated content, active third-party citation pipelines (PR, Reddit, G2), technical schema (Article, FAQ, Author markup), and "answer nugget" architecture on commercial pages - 40-60 word self-contained responses. AI-visible brands generate 4.2x more attributed pipeline from organic channels.

Citation Patterns · 2026 · AEO Vision
62% of AI Overview Citations Come From Outside the Organic Top 10 — YouTube Up 34% in Six Months
AEO Vision's analysis of Google AI Overview citation patterns finds that only 37.9% of URLs cited in AI results also rank in the organic top 10 - meaning 62% of citations go to pages that would not appear on standard search result pages. YouTube citations increased 34% in the past six months and have become the most-cited domain in Communication Services queries. Question-style queries trigger AI Overviews 60% of the time. Queries of 10 or more words reach a 53% trigger rate versus just 8% for 1-2 word searches.

Navarro's Take
"The Google top-10 to AI citation overlap falling from 76% to 38% in nine months is the number I keep coming back to. That's not gradual drift - that's a structural separation. When ChatGPT overlap with Google top-10 is only 2.1%, you're effectively operating in two different visibility systems with almost no shared logic. The measurement problem compounds this: 70.6% of AI-driven visits arriving without attribution means most brands are making budget decisions based on less than a third of their actual AI traffic. The 89% invisible B2B finding from MaximusLabs doesn't surprise me, but the 4x pipeline multiplier for the visible 11% should focus attention. This isn't a nice-to-have optimization anymore. And the AEO Vision data makes it concrete: if 62% of AI citations are going to pages outside your top 10, ranking isn't the strategy. Structured, citable content at every tier of the funnel is."
