The most unexpected entrant: NIH/NCBI jumped 41.3% MoM to 91,227 citations, entering the global top 3 for the first time. Institutional authority is now a first-tier citation signal, not just a niche factor for health content.

The report also surfaces what Meltwater calls citation rate compression: sources growing in total citation volume while simultaneously declining in citations-per-topic intensity. Reddit, for example, grew 13% in raw citations but its citation rate fell 16.7% — meaning more topics are referencing it, but it's being cited less heavily on any individual query. The practical implication: platform-specific strategies matter more as each AI model converges on different authority preferences. Claude leans on data aggregators like Statista; ChatGPT emphasizes institutional authority; Perplexity functions as a research engine with the widest source diversity.

WordPress VIP's Future of the Web 2026 research finds that 74% of consumers say the internet feels less human than a decade ago, and 60% view AI in brand messaging as a turnoff. Yet enterprise marketing teams are spending an average of 16.6 hours per week optimizing for AI visibility - a tension the report frames as the core challenge: using AI to appear more human, not less. No brand has yet established dominance in AI brand visibility - the window for early-mover advantage remains open.
