53% of Brands Are Completely Invisible in AI Answers — New Citation Rate Data Across All Platforms
July 2026 · Boring Marketing
A new study of 8,223 buyer-question checks across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini finds an overall AI citation rate of just 14.8% — meaning the typical brand appears in fewer than 15 out of every 100 relevant queries. More than half of all brands tested received zero citations across all four platforms.
Platform differences are stark: Perplexity and Gemini lead with 18-19% citation rates, while Claude sits at just 7.7%. The gap between best and worst platforms is 46x when measuring individual brand citation frequency — ChatGPT cites brands just 0.59% of the time per query, while Perplexity runs at 13.05%. The industry breakdown is equally uneven: legal and professional-services brands fare worst, with 86% never cited at all. One finding cuts against common assumptions: 51.7% of all AI citations point to brands' own pages, not third-party sources — which means owned-domain content strategy is not irrelevant, but it's only half the picture.
