Semrush Analyzed 126 Million AI Prompts — Being Mentioned by AI and Being Cited Are Two Different Problems
July 2026 · Semrush
Semrush's expanded 2026 AI Visibility Index — drawn from 126 million AI search prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews — surfaces a finding that most GEO strategies miss entirely: being mentioned by an AI model and being cited as a source are two separate, non-interchangeable outcomes. On Gemini specifically, the overlap between brand mention frequency and citation selection can be as low as 30%. A brand that appears in 70 out of 100 AI-generated answers may be cited as a source in only 21 of them.
The distinction has direct implications for measurement. Brands tracking "AI visibility" through mention frequency may be dramatically overstating their actual citation performance — the metric that drives clicks, referral traffic, and attribution. Winning on both dimensions simultaneously requires two separate strategies: earned media and brand authority signals to drive mentions, plus structured, credible, primary-source content to drive actual citation selection. The two levers do not automatically reinforce each other.
