93% of Google AI Mode Searches End Without a Single Click — And Cited Brands Get 35% More Traffic Than Everyone Else
July 2026 · Pasquale Pillitteri
The number that should be on every CMO's radar this week: 93% of searches conducted in Google AI Mode end without a single click to an external website. That's not a rounding error or an edge case — it's the default experience for informational queries, which now trigger an AI Overview on 99.9% of searches according to Ahrefs data. The era of click-through traffic as a primary search metric is effectively over for informational content.
But the data contains a critical split: brands that are cited inside AI answers experience +35% click-through rate compared to brands that are not cited. Being cited transforms your brand from invisible to authoritative within the AI answer itself — and that carries a measurable traffic premium. Nearly half of those citations come from pages ranking below position #5 in traditional search, meaning this is not just a reward for existing SEO leaders.

Brand Visibility · July 2026 · Jarred Smith
90% of What AI Cites About Your Brand Comes From Sites You Don't Control
Brand websites account for only 5-10% of the sources AI platforms reference (McKinsey, 2026). The other 90% comes from publishers, user-generated content, and review platforms. And 83% of AI Overview citations come from outside the traditional top-10 organic results. If your AI visibility strategy lives entirely on your own site, it covers less than 1 in 10 touchpoints.

AI Mode Tactics · July 2026 · SubscribePR
Pages Covering "Fan-Out" Sub-Queries Are 161% More Likely to Be Cited in AI Mode
Google AI Mode decomposes every prompt into multiple hidden sub-queries, retrieving results for each in parallel. Pages that rank for fan-out queries — the cost, timeline, alternatives, and risk questions surrounding a topic — are 161% more likely to be cited. The tactic: structure H2s as buyer questions, and deliver extractable answers in the first 40 words of each section.

GEO Signals · July 2026 · Omnibound
Brand Mentions Predict AI Visibility 3x Better Than Backlinks — And Content Distribution Drives 325% More Citations
Omnibound's GEO statistics roundup finds brand mentions carry a 0.664 correlation with AI citation rates versus 0.218 for backlinks — a 3x advantage. Adding statistics to a page delivers +41% GEO visibility boost (Princeton). And content distributed across wide publications rather than owned sites alone generates citation increases of up to 325%. The implication: PR and third-party mentions are now GEO infrastructure, not optional amplification.

Navarro's Take
"The 93% zero-click stat is alarming, but the panic is misplaced. The brands that are getting cited in those AI answers see 35% more clicks than everyone else — which means citation is now the new position one. What I find more important is the 90% figure: nine out of ten references AI makes about a brand come from sources the brand doesn't control. That tells me the real GEO work is off-site — third-party publishers, Reddit, Quora, review platforms. Your own website is a footnote in how AI describes you. If your GEO strategy starts and ends with your own domain, you're optimizing for 10% of the problem."
