68% of Google Searches Now End Without a Click — The Largest Zero-Click Jump Since 2019
June 2026 · Search Engine Land
A Similarweb study covering January–April 2026 found that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click — up from 60.45% in 2024 and 49% in 2019. That's a 7.56 percentage point jump in two years, the steepest increase on record. AI Overviews now appear on over 20% of queries and reduce click-through rates by nearly 60% when present. AI Mode represents just 0.34% of searches but has crossed 1 billion monthly users.
The direction is clear and not reversing. Brands still optimizing primarily for click-through rates are optimizing for a metric that shrinks by design every quarter. The question has shifted from "how do we rank higher?" to "how do we get cited when no one clicks at all?" That's a GEO question — and it has a different answer than SEO.

Drop Keyword How-To Content. AI Summarizes It Instantly. Earned Media Is the New SEO.
Forbes Agency Council contributor Adrian Falk argues that generic how-to content is now competitively worthless — AI answers it instantly, removing any reason to click through. The playbook: shift budget to earned media and founder thought leadership, optimize for share-of-model (how often your brand appears across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini), and treat third-party mentions as the primary distribution channel — not owned content. Traditional backlink metrics no longer capture what moves AI citation rates.

Navarro's Take
"The 68% zero-click number is the most underappreciated stat in marketing right now. Most brands are still measuring clicks — but when 7 out of 10 searches end without one, the click was never the destination. The answer was. GEO frameworks that treat AI citation as a means to traffic have the logic backwards: the citation IS the product. A brand mentioned in ChatGPT's answer to 'what's the best X?' has already won the consideration stage — whether or not anyone clicked through. The brands winning in 2026 started measuring citation frequency and share-of-model instead of session count. If your attribution model still starts with sessions, you're tracking the exhaust, not the engine."
