The AI Visibility Gap Is Widening: Top-Quartile Brands Now Score 42 Points Above the Median
2026 · Foglift
Foglift analyzed 4,217 brands across five industries — SaaS, e-commerce, healthcare, finance, and B2B services — measuring AI visibility scores across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. The median industry score ranges from 48 to 62 out of 100, with SaaS leading and e-commerce trailing. Top-quartile brands score 73-84. The gap between the top and bottom quartile grew from 32 points a year ago to 42 points — a compounding divergence that's accelerating.
The single largest structural predictor in the dataset: brands with structured data markup score 23 points higher on average than those without. Top performers share consistent entity information across the web, 95%+ schema coverage, and treat AI search as a systematic discipline rather than a content quality question. The divergence between optimized and unoptimized brands is widening every quarter — with no sign of convergence.

Service Businesses Score 0% AI Citations Across 119 LLM Responses — Structural Gaps Are the Cause
An audit of 9 service businesses across 7 industries found 0% citation rates across 119 LLM test queries — not because the content was poor, but because structural elements were broken. 78% lacked proper Google Business Profile descriptions, 0 of 9 deployed HowTo schema despite having procedural content, and average GBP alignment scored 26.9/100. The fix: 12-16 hours of technical implementation work per site, not new content.

Google AI Overviews Now Appear in 30-45% of Informational Searches — and Are Replacing Featured Snippets
Early 2026 data shows AI Overviews triggering on 30-45% of informational queries across health, finance, SaaS, e-commerce, and B2B — and increasingly replacing featured snippets rather than coexisting with them. Cited brands earn 35% more organic clicks than those not appearing in AI Overviews, shifting the metric that matters from raw rankings to citation inclusion.

A Snezzi analysis of AI SEO services found that only 12% of URLs cited by AI systems also ranked in Google's top 10 for identical queries — confirming AI visibility and traditional search rankings are increasingly independent channels. AI-referred traffic grew 527% year-over-year across tracked properties, and Semrush data shows AI search visitors convert at 4.4x the rate of organic visitors. The guide covers 9 services ranging from $29/month monitoring tools to managed citation programs.

Navarro's Take
"The Foglift gap data is what I keep showing people when they ask why urgency matters here. The spread between optimized and unoptimized brands grew from 32 to 42 points in a single year - that's not a gap that closes easily. The brands sitting at the top built systematic entity coverage, deployed schema, and treated AI visibility as infrastructure rather than a content project. The brands at the bottom are still thinking about this as a content quality problem. Meanwhile, structured data alone accounts for a 23-point average advantage in Foglift's data. That's a technical implementation decision, not a writing decision. The entry point for meaningful AI visibility is still uncrowded because most teams haven't made that implementation decision yet. That window won't stay open."
