AI Overview Citations From Organic Top-10 Collapse to 38% — Down From 76% in 12 Months
2026 · Ahrefs
Ahrefs tracked which pages Google's AI Overviews actually cite — and the relationship between organic rank and AI citation has fractured. In July 2025, 76% of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the organic top-10. That figure has dropped to 38%. The majority of AI citations now come from pages that don't rank in the top-10 at all, and in many cases don't rank for the direct query. AI Overviews use "query fan-out" — the system generates related sub-queries and pulls citations from those SERPs too, bypassing the direct keyword result entirely.
The single most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews is now YouTube, accounting for 18% of all non-ranking citations. Pages that answer specific sub-questions — not just the head keyword — and content on platforms AI systems treat as authoritative reference sources are pulling citations away from pages that hold organic top-10 positions. The data confirms that traditional SEO rank is a lagging indicator of AI visibility, not a predictor of it.

Navarro's Take
"The Ahrefs number that should unsettle most SEO teams is not the drop from 76% to 38% — it's what that drop implies. In 12 months, AI systems went from essentially following Google's organic rankings to building their own citation graphs. They're running related sub-queries, pulling from YouTube, from community platforms, from sources that don't rank for the head keyword at all. Your page sitting at position 3 for 'best CRM software' is no longer a reliable path to appearing when someone asks an AI the same question. The content that answers the adjacent sub-questions — why CRM implementations fail, what the switching cost looks like, how integration typically works — that's what's getting cited. Traditional SEO optimizes for the head term. AI visibility requires covering the territory around the head term. Those are different content strategies."
