Only 10.5% of AI-Cited URLs Are Still Being Cited 6 Weeks Later — Brand Search Volume Is the Strongest Predictor
2026 · Digital Authority Partners
Digital Authority Partners tracked 1,127 unique URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews across 30 standardized queries. Six weeks later, they re-ran the same queries — and only 119 of those URLs were still being cited. That's a 10.5% retention rate. Nearly 90% of AI citations rotate out within six weeks.
The study also identified the strongest predictor of citation frequency: brand search volume, with a 0.334 correlation — higher than any other single variable tested, including domain authority, content freshness, or backlink count. Brands with high ambient search demand get cited more because AI systems use that demand as a proxy for trustworthiness. The implication is direct: earned media and brand awareness campaigns are not separate from GEO — they are GEO.
