ChatGPT Converts at 16% vs Google's 1.8% — But Its Market Share Just Fell From 77% to 57%
June 2026 · TechnologyChecker
TechnologyChecker's June 2026 update on ChatGPT puts two numbers next to each other that every GEO practitioner needs to see simultaneously: ChatGPT traffic converts at 16% — compared to Google's 1.8% — making it roughly 9x more valuable per session. And yet ChatGPT's web traffic share has dropped from 77% to 56.72% since early 2025, as Claude reached 6.02% and Gemini surged to 25.46% (partly from Android pre-installation). The platform currently reaches 900 million weekly active users and generates $25 billion in annualized revenue.
The conversion quality gap is staggering and under-appreciated: 49% of ChatGPT usage involves general knowledge queries, yet the sessions that navigate to a site convert at nearly 9x the Google organic rate. That gap exists because AI-referred visitors arrive with intent already resolved — they're not browsing, they followed a specific recommendation. At the same time, Claude's 770% growth trajectory over the past year and its own distinct retrieval signals mean any brand treating AI visibility as a single-platform problem is already behind.
