Getting Cited by AI Is Only Half the Battle — 89% of Citations Disappear Within 6 Weeks
June 2026 · Digital Authority Partners
Digital Authority Partners tracked 1,127 unique URLs that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews cited in response to 30 queries. Six weeks and three collection waves later, only 119 of those URLs were still being cited. The average Citation Retention Rate across platforms was 33% — meaning two out of three citations a brand earns today will be gone within six weeks.
87% of all query-platform combinations fell below a 70% stability threshold. One in four saw complete citation turnover — zero overlap between the first and third measurement wave. Platform breakdown: Gemini was most volatile at 11% retention. AI Overviews held 27%, ChatGPT 31%, Copilot 34%. Perplexity led at 44% — the most stable, but still well below what most marketers would assume. The study also confirmed that 60% of AI-cited URLs do not rank in the top 20 organic results for the same query.
