Google Search Console Gets Generative AI Reports — Plus an Opt-Out Toggle That Doesn't Hurt Rankings
June 3, 2026 · Google / PPC.Land
Google launched dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, filling the measurement gap that has existed since AI Overviews launched in 2024. The reports show impressions, pages, countries, and devices for content appearing in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's AI features — but no click data yet.
The rollout launched UK-first to a subset of publishers, with global expansion to follow. Context for why this matters: AI Mode now has 1 billion monthly users, organic CTR has dropped 61% for queries where AI features appear, and zero-click searches climbed from 56% to 69% since AI Overviews launched. Now, for the first time, site owners can see exactly how much AI impression exposure they're getting — and which pages are getting it.

Should You Block Google's AI Features? The Data Behind the Opt-Out Decision
Google confirmed the new opt-out toggle carries no ranking penalty — taking effect June 17. In a survey of 1,200 publishers, 41.9% plan to stay opted in and 33.2% plan to opt out. Three controls now exist: Google-Extended (blocks training only), nosnippet (blocks AI features but kills organic snippet), and the new toggle (blocks AI features, organic ranking untouched).

Google Publishes Official GEO Guide — Says llms.txt, Content Chunking Are "Not Needed" for Google AI
Google's official guide for optimizing for generative AI features advises publishers to focus on foundational SEO, unique content with clear author expertise, and solid technical structure — while explicitly stating that llms.txt files, artificial content chunking, and AI-specific rewrites are not required for Google's systems. The guide does not address other AI platforms.

Key Takeaway
The GSC AI Reports Are a Win — But Google's "llms.txt Not Needed" Only Applies to Google
The Search Console AI reports close a measurement gap that has existed since AI Overviews launched. That is unambiguously good news — you can now see how many impressions your content gets inside AI features, broken down by page. Use this data to identify your highest-performing AI pages and double down on what's working.
But the "llms.txt not needed" guidance needs context. Google is talking about Google's systems. ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity — which collectively account for nearly all non-Google AI referral traffic — do actively use llms.txt to discover and structure site content. Treating Google's guidance as the full picture ignores the 9% of AI referral traffic that isn't Google and converts at significantly higher rates. Don't opt out of llms.txt for your non-Google audience because Google doesn't need it.
